Educational Psychology support to help children & young people thrive
Flying Colours provides high-quality, evidence-informed Educational Psychology support to schools across North Wales and North West England.
Our work is proportionate, practical and tailored to the individual child or young person. We combine established Educational Psychology practice with a strengths-based approach, drawing on Positive Psychology where this adds value.
Schools, academies/MATs and Local Authorities across North Wales and North West England can commission support, subject to availability.
Educational Psychology Assessment
Our Educational Psychology Assessment Package provides a complete piece of professional involvement rather than simply a period of time in school.
Each assessment is individually planned according to the referral question and the information provided.
Before the appointment, the Educational Psychologist reviews the Request for Involvement Form and any accompanying information to identify the key questions to be explored and determine the most appropriate assessment approach.
Assessment is proportionate and referral-led rather than based on a standard assessment battery. Depending on the needs of the individual pupil or student, this may include:
- consultation with school staff
- observation
- individual work with the pupil or student
- psychological assessment
- other appropriate assessment approaches selected using professional judgement.
Following the school visit, the Educational Psychologist undertakes any necessary scoring and interpretation, psychological formulation and analysis, and prepares a written report setting out the findings, conclusions and practical recommendations.
The assessment package therefore includes professional work undertaken before, during and after the school visit.
EHCP and IDP Assessment
Flying Colours also undertakes Educational Psychology assessment to contribute to statutory processes, including Education, Health and Care Plan assessments in England and Individual Development Plan assessments within Wales.
This work may be commissioned by schools, academy trusts or local authorities.
Consultation and Additional EP Support
Schools may also commission Educational Psychology consultation or other additional professional input where appropriate.
This might include consultation around an individual pupil, discussion of psychological needs or additional follow-up work outside an agreed assessment package.
Resources for schools
We believe useful Educational Psychology should have an impact beyond an individual assessment.
Flying Colours is developing a growing collection of practical, psychology-informed resources to help teachers and SENCOs understand needs, implement strategies and support children and young people in everyday school life.
Some resources will be freely available, with additional resources available to schools working with Flying Colours and through our developing specialist resource collections.
